"You've got to find some way of saying it without saying
it. " Duke Ellington
Improvisation is the process of spontaneously
creating fresh melodies over the continuously repeating cycle of chord changes of a tune.
Learn the techniques you need to improvise including
standard jazz tunes and how to improvise through the chord changes. Transcribe solos by great improvisers. Work
on skills essential to being a good musician, such as ear training, Jazz theory lessons, rhythm, and sight reading.
A pair of Johns Hopkins and government scientists have discovered
that when jazz musicians improvise, their brains turn off areas linked to self-censoring and inhibition, and turn on those
that let self-expression flow.

“It’s a remarkable frame of mind,” he adds,
“during which, all of a sudden, the musician is generating music that has never been heard, thought, practiced or played
before. What comes out is completely spontaneous.”
